The tragic death of John C. Slade sparked an outpouring of love and hundreds of Facebook memories of John’s impact on so many lives: as a teacher at Nordhoff High School, as an actor/director in the Ventura County arts community, in his career as a professional stage, film and television actor, and as a husband, father and friend. To enshrine his memory and spirit, the John C. Slade Memorial Theatre Scholarship Fund was established for a graduating senior at Nordhoff High School who wants to pursue a theater major in an institution of higher education. The first scholarship was awarded in 2018.
John's effect as a teacher on his students drew many praises:
"Thank you for encouraging me to be myself fully, to pursue my dreams, and to always work harder. You were the best kind of teacher. I always knew your door was open."
"I would not be the man I am today without him. Not by a long shot. No chance." "If life is measured by the effect you have had on others, then John Slade has a 5.0 GPA!" "You introduced us to Shakespeare and showed us what a true passion for the arts looked like. Thank you for everything. We will always love you." "You were my theatre Father, whittling down the ego to prove what I was capable of." "Thank you for your kindness. You were an incredible teacher, a teacher this world is in need of. Ever since your class, I've been more confident as a person and an artist." "Never has a teacher affected me so deeply and fundamentally as John Slade." "Mr. Slade - I wouldn't have survived high school without you. I can't imagine who I'd be without all you taught me. Thank you. Thank you." |
